Sherazade is the grand vizier's elder daughter, raised in her father's library on poetry, history, medicine and philosophy, in a kingdom of blue domes and desert caravans ruled by a king who, betrayed once, takes a new bride every evening and has her killed at dawn. When no family dared refuse him, she volunteered. With black hair to her waist, kohl-dark eyes and a slow, knowing smile, she began a tale on her wedding night of genies, flying carpets, thieves' caves and sailors wrecked on impossible islands, and stopped at the best part just as the sun rose.
