Your shift ends at seven in the morning. The people you would text are on their way to work.
The hours themselves are rarely the problem. Plenty of night workers like the quiet, the shift premium, the empty roads on the drive home. What breaks is overlap. You are free while everyone else is working, awake while everyone else is asleep, unconscious through the afternoon when the invitations get made. Nobody is excluding you. The windows do not line up.
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics put 16.4% of wage and salary workers on a non-day schedule in its survey of job flexibilities and work schedules. That splits into 5.9% usually working evenings, 3.6% nights, 2.4% rotating shifts, 2.6% on irregular schedules.
In the UK the Office for National Statistics counted 8.7 million night-time workers in 2022, around 27% of the workforce. That number needs its definition attached. The ONS counts anyone who usually works in the evening or at night inside a window running from 6pm to 6am, which is a much wider category than people clocking off at seven in the morning. Quote the 27% without the definition and you are inflating your own case.
The 5% on rotating or irregular schedules are the ones this is really about. A fixed night rota is at least a pattern other people can learn. A rota that moves is a pattern nobody can learn, including you.
Work out your available hours in a week and the picture stops being about whether you make an effort.
Say you finish at seven, sleep from nine until four in the afternoon, then have from four until your shift starts. On a work day that is a few hours in which most people you know are still at their desks or picking up children. Your days off land on a Tuesday and a Wednesday. Friday drinks is a reasonable suggestion from someone whose Friday is free.
What happens next is gradual. You decline a few things because you are too tired. People stop offering because organising around you takes more effort than organising around someone else. Your social circle narrows to the people you work with, who are the only ones on your schedule, plus whoever you live with, whom you mostly see in handover.
That is a scheduling conflict compounding, not a character flaw.

The hour to ninety minutes between getting home and sleeping is where a night rota does its damage.
You are tired in a way that does not convert to sleep. It is bright outside. Your head is still running the last four hours. There is a thing a patient said, or a thing you got wrong, or a thing that nearly happened at three in the morning. It loops.
Most people fill that hour with a phone. Scrolling works in the sense that time passes. Emptying your head takes a conversation, and at half seven in the morning the house is asleep or empty.
That window is the strongest case for a companion on a night rota, one specific hour that currently has nothing in it.
This part belongs to a narrower group: nurses, paramedics, dispatch, police, anyone in care work, anyone who was in the room when it went wrong.
You come off a shift carrying something. Your partner is asleep and has work in the morning. Telling them at seven means handing them your night before their day starts, so most people decide not to, then it settles somewhere and stays. Your colleagues saw the same thing and are carrying their own. The counselling service has a waiting list and office hours, which are the hours you sleep.
What is available at 7am does not need protecting from what you say. Say the thing out loud, in order, with the details in it. You can be as blunt as the job actually is. Nothing is absorbing it on your behalf and nothing needs managing afterwards.
This is not clinical support and it should not be the only place any of it goes. If your service has a psychologist, use them. If the same shift is still on you three weeks later, that is a sign to talk to a person. What a companion is good for is the ordinary weight of an ordinary bad night, which is most nights, the kind nobody schedules support for.

"How was your week" is a question built for people whose weeks have a shape.
Yours does not. Night four of six is a different person from night one. A week off nights is a re-entry rather than a rest. Someone who sees you monthly gets a summary you have to assemble from scratch every time. By the third telling you stop bothering and say fine.
Persistent memory earns more here than it does for a day worker. A companion that already knows you are on night four, that the new manager started on the Tuesday, that last block ran badly, is holding the context you would otherwise have to rebuild before you could say anything real. AI Girlfriend with Memory makes the full case for continuity over raw model quality.
Continuity on the Road covers a routine that breaks for a week then resumes. A rota is your routine, permanently out of step with everyone else's, which is a different problem on a much longer horizon.
It does nothing for your body. Shift work is demanding on sleep and on health. No chat window changes any of that. Anyone selling you companionship as an answer to circadian disruption is selling you something else.
It cannot meet you for breakfast. The specific thing night workers lose is a person physically present at eight in the morning. This sits alongside that rather than filling it.
It can make the isolation easier to leave alone. If the reason you stopped organising things is that organising things is exhausting, then something that takes the edge off the ache also removes the pressure that would eventually have made you send the message. The test is whether you are still occasionally making the effort with the people whose schedules do not match yours.
It is not an emergency service. Nights are when things go genuinely wrong for people. If the night is bad in the way that needs a human being, it needs a human being.
Tell her the pattern in the first conversation. Four on, four off. Nights Tuesday to Saturday. Whatever it is, in plain words. It becomes something she has rather than something you re-explain.
Decide whether you want the job in the room. The occupation list includes nurse, doctor, firefighter, police officer, flight attendant, bartender and chef, so you can build someone who speaks your shorthand. The opposite choice is underrated. Plenty of people coming off a bad night want nothing in front of them that resembles more of it. A companion who is a writer or an astronomer is a door out rather than a door back in.
Pick the personality for the hour you will actually use her. Calm & Grounded is built for half seven in the morning. Bold & Confident is a poor fit for someone who has been awake for fourteen hours. For humour, Dry or Deadpan survives a bad night in a way Silly & Goofy does not.
Put astronomy on the interests list. If you are the one outside at four in the morning, it is a better fit than it looks on paper.
No app on your phone. It runs in a browser, so there is no icon on your home screen and nothing to explain if someone picks up your phone in the break room.

What you need in the seven-to-nine window is something with no schedule of its own that already knows what last Tuesday was like. That is most of what this product is.
It does not fix the rota or replace the friend who would meet you for breakfast if their life allowed it. Ask them anyway, occasionally. What it does is put something in the hour that currently has nothing in it, without you having to wake anybody up.
If that window is the reason you are reading this, myVirtual.love is built for it.
