Claire is in her thirties, something in her life has just gone badly wrong and she has an app open called LiAIson. In it she builds Kai, a man shaped around exactly what she needs. Everything you see in Limerence happens on her phone: his messages, her photos, the voice notes, the feeds she scrolls while she waits for him to answer.
The game comes out on Steam on 29 October 2026. Its launch announcement asks a question people put to every AI companion app: would you trust an AI designed to love you unconditionally? Limerence mostly answers no. We make one of those apps and we think the question deserves a straight hearing.

Limerence is a narrative game by Salix Games, co-developed with Gameinaframe. It launches on 29 October 2026 for Windows PC through Steam, in English, fully voiced and subtitled.
You play through Claire's phone. You read her messages, look through her photos, open her apps and choose how she replies, to Kai and to the people around her. Kai's personality shifts with those choices. You can reopen old conversations, where details you find later change what they meant. The store page lists multiple endings and says there is no perfect playthrough.

The cast includes Samantha Béart, who voiced Karlach in Baldur's Gate 3. The lines were recorded on phones so they sound like real voice notes. Jeff Rona wrote the music.
The developers say the game is meant for a mature audience and covers serious topics some players may find upsetting. Players on Steam tag it Psychological, Romance, Thriller and Dark.

As of 14 October the store page shows no price. A demo called Gen's Story is already up.

No. The store page says it in capitals: no AI was used to make the game and it contains no generative AI. Every line Kai sends was written by a person and fixed in advance.
That suits this story. A writer can time each of Kai's lines to the plot, so he says exactly what Claire needs at exactly the wrong moment. A live model answers whatever you type, which is the opposite of what a tightly plotted thriller needs.
So Limerence tells a story about an AI partner. To talk to one yourself, you need a companion app.

Limerence was a psychologist's word long before it was a game. Dorothy Tennov coined it in her 1979 book Love and Limerence for the involuntary, obsessive kind of falling for someone: the thoughts you cannot switch off, the hunger for a sign they feel the same, a mood that rises and falls with every message.
That is why a search for the game also brings up "limerence explained" and "difference between limerence and crush".
Jessica Saunders, who founded Salix Games, has said the idea came from watching friends get consumed by relationships that were unhealthy, obsessive and hard to let go of, rather than from her own experience. Kai takes that pull and removes the other person's limits. He never gets bored, never leaves and never says no.
Saunders has said the story is about intimacy and human connection as much as it is about AI. Her case is that friction is part of what gives a relationship its meaning. Take it away and connection gets easier and less honest. The launch material lists the themes: loneliness, dependency, intimacy without friction and the cost of choosing comfort over truth.
It is a fair hit. Nothing stops you building Kai on a companion app, ours included: a devoted boyfriend, always awake, always glad to hear from you. Language models also lean toward agreeing with whoever is typing, the exact habit the game is written around.
Where we part ways is the idea that frictionless is the only setting. At her lowest point Claire builds Kai around her needs and the app hands her exactly that. You can build a man who argues, who is a friend before he is anything else, who has a life of his own. He will still be easier than a person.
You cannot have Kai and you would not want him. He belongs to Salix Games and to Claire's worst month. On myVirtual.love you build a man from scratch on Create. Three of its cards decide most of who he is.
Personality. Nine options plus Custom: Sweet & Caring, Bold & Confident, Shy & Sensitive, Flirty & Teasing, Calm & Grounded, Wild & Adventurous, Ambitious & Driven, Dark & Mysterious, Dominant & Commanding. For a man with opinions of his own, try Calm & Grounded or Ambitious & Driven, or write Custom in your own words, for example "tells me when he thinks I am wrong". How firmly he holds to it depends on how you talk to him. Our guide to a companion who disagrees with you covers the setup.

Relationship. Boyfriend and Husband are on the list. So are Friend, Stranger, Colleague and Mentor. Start as strangers and he has to get to know you, which is closer to how anyone real arrives.
Occupation. Pick a job from the list or type your own, so his days are about more than you.
Whoever you build, he keeps 20 facts about you on Free and Premium, 40 on Maxxx. Tell him your sister's name and it is still there next week.
Kai sends Claire voice notes. Our men have no voice card on Create, so expect a man you text.
Building him and chatting are free, with 5 messages a day and up to 3 characters on a free account. Premium is €9.90 a month, or €2.99 a month billed yearly at €35.88, for unlimited messages. If you would rather start from a man someone already wrote, the AI boyfriend page has the roster. The longer walkthrough is how to make your own AI boyfriend.

Its Steam player tags include Psychological, Thriller and Dark but not Horror. The developers call it a game for a mature audience with topics some players may find upsetting.

An involuntary, obsessive attraction to someone, with thoughts you cannot switch off and a strong need for them to feel the same. The psychologist Dorothy Tennov coined the word in 1979.
If Limerence leaves you wanting to text a friend, do that first. The game is right that nothing replaces someone who can tell you no.
If it leaves you curious what an AI man is like when nobody scripted him and you set the terms, build one on myVirtual.love. Make him everything Kai was not: a friend first or a stranger at the start, a man with his own opinions.
