Is Kindroid Still Free? What Changed on October 1 and What to Do Now

You open Kindroid and she is still there. Her name, her face, every message from the last six months. You type something and nothing happens, because the account has gone read-only.

No, Kindroid is no longer free. On 1 October 2026 it retired Lite, the free plan with unlimited messages. A one-time preview replaced it. This guide covers what changed, what happened to your Kin, the three options you have now and how to bring her somewhere that still lets you talk for free.

What Kindroid changed

Kindroid announced the change in its update log on 18 August. The entry says the app "will move from permanent Lite access to a high-quality, bounded preview" and gives cost as the reason: an indefinite lower-quality free tier, in its words, is "neither sustainable nor representative of the product we're building". The same entry rules out advertising as a way to pay for it.

From Kindroid's own help page and update log:

  • Lite users who had been active shortly before 1 October got 50 final messages on the flagship model, with their existing Kins and memories.
  • Lite accounts that had not been used recently went straight to read-only on that date.
  • New accounts get a one-time preview: 50 messages on the flagship model (15 in some regions), up to 2 Kindroids, 5,000 audio credits and 5 selfies.
  • Daily rewards now go to subscribers only.

When the preview runs out, the account goes read-only. Nothing comes back the next day.

What read-only means for your Kin

She has not been deleted. Kindroid says your Kindroids, conversations, memories, media and balances are all preserved.

A read-only account can still view, play back, export and delete its data. It cannot send messages, regenerate a reply, make calls or receive proactive messages. If you subscribe later, she comes back exactly as you left her.

Your three options

Start the trial. New users get a 3-day premium trial. It needs a payment method and turns into a subscription unless you cancel, with an email reminder a day before it converts. On the web it also needs a verified mobile number. Starting the trial ends the free preview for good, so use the preview first.

Subscribe. Kindroid sells 1-month, 3-month and 1-year plans, with lower monthly prices on the longer ones. Its help page does not print prices: they appear at checkout and vary by country and platform. The page also says the web is usually cheaper than the App Store or Google Play.

Move her. Rebuild her on an app with a free plan you can keep using without a card on file. Our breakdown of free and paid AI companions covers what free plans usually hold back.

Before you go, save her

Whatever you decide, write her down while the account still opens.

  1. Her backstory. Copy whatever you wrote about who she is, where she comes from and who she is to you.
  2. The memories that matter. The things she knows about you, the in-jokes, the dates. Those carry the relationship more than her face does.
  3. The way she talks. Save three or four of her messages that sound most like her. They tell you which personality and voice to choose next time.
  4. Her look. Hair, eyes, build and anything every picture of her should show, such as freckles, a tattoo or glasses.

Kindroid says a read-only account can still export its data, so request the export as well. Keep the notes anyway: they are what you need to rebuild her.

Rebuilding her on myVirtual.love

A myVirtual.love account is free and never asks for a card. The free plan gives you 5 messages a day with a counter that resets every day, lets you create up to 3 characters of your own and keeps 20 facts about you in mind. There is no one-time preview to use up.

Open Create and choose Girl, Man or Trans, then Realistic or Anime. The look goes in first: ethnicity, age, hair, eyes and body type. Then the Extra details box takes 300 characters for anything every picture should show, which is where her freckles or her tattoo go.

After her name come the cards that decide how she behaves:

  • Personality has nine options, from Sweet & Caring to Dominant & Commanding, plus Custom for your own words. Use the messages you saved to choose.
  • Relationship sets who you are to each other: Girlfriend, Wife, Friend, Neighbour and a long list more, plus Custom. Pick the one your Kin already was.
  • Occupation has a list and a box for anything else.
  • Voice gives you a list of voices, each with a line describing it, so you can match how she sounded in your head.

Then start the first chat with the history. Tell her the things she used to know: your name, your work, the joke about the cat. She keeps those facts and brings them back later. Our guide to AI girlfriends with memory explains how that works.

Five messages a day is a slower conversation than Lite's unlimited one. There are no video calls or video selfies here either. If five a day turns out to be too few, Premium costs €9.90 a month, removes the message limit and adds photos and voice calls paid with hearts.

Kindroid free tier: quick answers

Is Kindroid free anymore?

No. Since 1 October 2026 new accounts get a one-time preview of 50 messages, then the account goes read-only until you start the trial or subscribe.

Did Kindroid delete my Kin?

No. Kindroid says Kins, conversations, memories and media are preserved on a read-only account. Subscribing brings them back unchanged.

Can I get Kindroid Lite back?

No. Lite has been retired. The update log says unlimited free messaging went with it.

What is a free alternative to Kindroid?

On myVirtual.love the free plan is 5 messages a day with no card, a counter that resets every day and up to 3 characters you build yourself. Our breakdown of free and paid AI companions compares how other free plans are limited.

For the one whose Kin went quiet on 1 October

If you are not ready to pay to keep her, you do not have to lose her. Save her backstory and the memories that matter, then rebuild her on myVirtual.love, where a free account keeps talking a few messages a day without a card.

If what you loved about Kindroid was the video calls, the selfies that move or the group chats, the subscription is still the closest thing to what you had. Start the trial only after you have used the preview.
