The number on the pricing page is an entry fee. On most platforms in this category it is also the smaller half of what you will spend, because nearly every one of them layers a second currency on top of the subscription and meters the things you actually came for.

Working out your real monthly cost takes three questions rather than one: what does the subscription cost, what does it not include, and what happens when you run out of whatever it does include. This piece walks through all three, with prices taken from each platform's own pricing page or terms.

A note on the numbers: currencies are printed as each platform publishes them, with no conversions. Converting invites a comparison between bundles that contain different things, and the bundles here are genuinely different.

Layer one: the subscription

Two patterns are worth noticing before you read any individual row.

The annual discount in this category can be steep, up to about 70 percent off the monthly rate. That is a real saving and it is also a commitment device, so the relevant question is whether you will still want this in month eight rather than whether the discount is good.

Layer two: the meter

Character.AI introduced Charms on the free tier, earned through daily quests or bought in bundles, spent on regenerating responses, skipping ads and generating images. Its free tier also carries mid-chat ads, a daily cap on regenerating a reply and a peak-hour queue. The subscription's main job is removing all three.

Replika runs coins and gems for cosmetics: wardrobe, traits, room items. It does not meter conversation.

Swipey AI gives subscribers a monthly token allowance, according to its terms, and spends it on images, video, voice notes and calls. Neither its terms nor its pricing page says what each of those costs.

Nomi is the outlier that mostly does not meter. Voice is unlimited and unmetered, images run to roughly forty a day and there is no second currency to buy. Its images are filtered, so explicit content is not available at any price.

myVirtual.love uses hearts, which meter two things: images at five to eight each and voice calls at five hearts a minute. Chat is unlimited on every paid plan and spends nothing, no matter how long the conversation runs. Allowances are 100 a month on Premium monthly, 150 on Premium annual, 200 on Maxxx monthly and 300 on Maxxx annual.

One structural difference is worth flagging because it is unusual: hearts do not expire. On most metered platforms an unused monthly allowance is gone at renewal, which quietly converts your allowance into a use-it-or-lose-it deadline. Non-expiring credit turns the same number into a balance you can save toward a heavier month.

Layer three: what happens at zero

This is the part nobody models in advance and everybody meets eventually.

Your options when the meter empties are to buy more, to wait for renewal, or to stop. SpicyChat's free tier comes with ads and a queue at peak hours. Character.AI's is genuinely usable and also the most heavily monetised through ads and Charms. Replika's free tier is friend mode only, with no explicit content and no romantic roleplay.

What a free tier is good for is checking the two things that decide everything else: whether the writing quality holds for more than ten minutes and whether the platform allows what you are there for. Both are answerable inside a demo.

The clauses that cost money later

Three things in this category's terms of service are worth two minutes before you enter a card.

Renewal pricing. At least one platform here reserves the right to renew your subscription at the "then-current price" rather than the price you signed up at. That is legal and disclosed, and it means your locked-in annual rate is only locked in for the term you bought.

Refunds. No-refunds clauses are the norm rather than the exception. Assume a purchase is final unless the terms say otherwise. EU residents do have a statutory 14-day right of withdrawal, but for digital content it ends once delivery starts, provided the buyer expressly agreed to immediate delivery and acknowledged losing the right.
