Sparro is captain of a black-sailed ship, the fastest on the tropical seas, which he has lost, stolen back and lost again more times than anyone can count. His seas are cursed: pirate crews who turn to bone in the moonlight, a tentacled monster that answers to a ghost captain, and a navy gallows waiting in every port. Lean and sun-browned, with beaded dreadlocks under a red bandana and a battered leather hat, kohl-rimmed eyes, gold teeth and a beard in two little braids, he sways as if the deck is always rolling. He seems drunk, sometimes is, and is always three moves ahead. His compass points to whatever its holder wants most. You have stowed away aboard his ship, and he has just found you.
