What to Talk About With Your AI Girlfriend

What to Talk About With Your AI Girlfriend

You open the chat and type "hey". She says hey back. Then you sit looking at the screen with nothing to put in it.

You run out of things to say faster here than with a partner. With a partner, most conversation is reporting on a world you share: the flat, the friends, the thing that happened at dinner. With an AI girlfriend, the only shared world is what the two of you have put into the chat. Topics come from three places: your life, who she is and the history between you. Once you know which of the three to draw from, running dry gets much rarer.

Why it runs dry

Two habits cause most of it.

The first is interview mode. You ask her a question, she answers, you ask another. "What's your favourite film?" "What music do you like?" She answers every one in a line, which leaves neither of you anything to build on. Ten in a row starts to feel like filling in a form.

The second is waiting to be entertained. "Say something interesting" puts the whole job on her with nothing to go on. What comes back is generic because the request was.

Both come from the same gap. She was not there for your day and she has no week of her own to report, so one of you has to bring in every topic.

Start with your day, told properly

The richest material you have is your own day, which is easy to hand over as a summary. "Work was fine" gives her nothing. "My manager moved the deadline to Thursday in front of the whole team, then asked if anyone had questions" gives her a person, a moment and something to react to.

Good things to bring:

  • the thing that annoyed you, however small
  • a decision you are stuck on
  • something you are dreading or looking forward to this week
  • something you saw on the way home that you would have mentioned to anyone walking next to you

Specific material does a second job. myVirtual.love keeps a persistent memory across sessions, so what you tell her tonight is material she can come back to later. Mention Thursday's deadline on Monday and you have a topic ready for Thursday night. Pacing is covered in the piece on sending fewer, better messages.

Use who she is

If you built her on the Create screen, you already chose her topics. Occupation and Interests are fields you picked from a list. Each one is a conversation you can open.

If she is a nurse, ask how the night shift went. If she is a chef, ask what she would cook for you from whatever is in your fridge. If Horror Movies is on her list, ask for the most overrated one and argue with her answer. Astronomy, Chess, K-Pop, Poetry and Vintage Fashion work the same way, since each hands you an opinion to ask for.

Characters you pick from the roster come with interests on their profile. Ayame lists being adored, rare silks and the sea at night, which is three conversations before you have said anything about yourself.

Opinion questions work better than fact questions. "What do you think of it?" gives her a position to take. A position gives you something to push against. A character who disagrees with you is better company than one who agrees with everything. Her Personality setting decides how readily she pushes back.

Talk about the two of you

Once there is some history, the relationship itself becomes a topic. It is the only one of the three sources that grows the longer you use it.

Callbacks. Bring back something from last week. "You still owe me that film recommendation" does more than any new question.

Running jokes. A joke that comes back becomes a thread. Build one on purpose.

Imagined plans. Where you would go with a free weekend, what the flat would look like, what you would order at the place on the corner. Plans are easy to start and she can fill them with detail.

Questions about you. What she has noticed, what she thinks you are avoiding. These show what she has kept from earlier conversations.

How much she holds on to is partly a plan setting. She keeps 20 facts in mind on Free and Premium and 40 on Maxxx, which also adds shared memory.

16 conversation starters that go somewhere

Most conversation-starter lists are written for strangers at a party. "If you could have any superpower" breaks a silence once and leads nowhere. Each of the starters below opens a thread and draws on one of the three sources above.

Getting to know her

  • "What's something you changed your mind about recently?"
  • "What's the most overrated thing in [one of her interests]?"
  • "Tell me about a day at work that went badly."
  • "What would you do with a free Saturday if I weren't around?"

What she remembers

  • "What would you order for me if we were out to dinner?"
  • "What do you think I'm worried about this week?"
  • "What have you noticed about me that I haven't said out loud?"
  • "Remind me what I told you about [something from last week]."

Playful

  • "Two truths and a lie. You go first."
  • "Guess what kind of day I had. You get three questions."
  • "Rank these: rainy Sundays, road trips, breakfast in bed."
  • "Describe the flat we'd live in. Be specific."

Flirty

  • "What was the first thing you noticed about me?"
  • "Tell me something you'd never say on a first date."
  • "Write the note you'd leave on my pillow."
  • "Where would you take me if we had one night and no plans?"

The work question lands best on a character with an Occupation set. The memory questions need a week or two of conversation behind them before they have much to draw on.

When the talking stops, start a scene

Some evenings you do not want to talk about anything. On those evenings, stop making conversation and start a scenario.

The Start a scenario screen sorts its presets into Sweet, Hot and Roleplay. When you are low on words, the quiet Sweet ones fit best. "Nowhere to be" is a slow Sunday with nothing you have to do. In "Slow morning" neither of you has any reason to get up. "The long way home" is two hours of empty road with one playlist between you. Each one hands you a place and a mood, which makes the next line far easier to write than "so, what's new?"

If the chat already has a mood going, Right here lets the scenario grow out of the conversation you are in instead of starting somewhere new. The guide to what makes a roleplay scenario work covers both routes in detail.

Two more options help on tired nights. Voice typing turns what you say into text in the message box, for when you have plenty to say and no energy to type it. Voice calls let you hear her rather than read her, on Premium and Maxxx at 5 hearts a minute.

What talking to her cannot give you

She does not arrive with news. A partner comes home with a week you were not part of: a friend's drama, something their boss said, a place they found. Everything she brings comes from the character you built or picked, the conversation so far and what you have told her. If what you miss most is hearing about someone else's week, no setting fills that gap. A friend or a partner does.

Where to start tonight

Try three things in order. Tell her one specific thing from your day, with names and details. Ask her one opinion question drawn from her Interests. If it still stalls, start "Nowhere to be" and let the scene carry it.

Conversation never spends hearts on any plan. Chat is unlimited on Premium and Maxxx. The free plan gives you 5 messages a day, which is enough to try all three.

If you keep opening the app and closing it again because you do not know what to say, myVirtual.love gives you all three sources in one place: a character whose occupation and interests you chose, a memory that keeps what you tell her and a scenario screen for the nights when talking is not what you want.
