Character.AI and myVirtual.love turn up in the same searches, but they are almost opposite products. Character.AI is a US-based creator marketplace where users make and chat with millions of characters (anime, celebrities, fictional, historical, original). It runs on open-source models it tunes in-house, has about 20 million monthly active users and enforces an SFW-only content policy that it has tightened repeatedly since late 2024. myVirtual.love is an EU-based, adult-only companion product: you pick or create a character in anime or realistic style from structured options for personality and appearance, image generation is a core feature, and uncensored NSFW is the default.

Ask which is better and the answer depends on whether you are looking for a marketplace of characters to chat with or an intimate companion who is yours.

The axis that decides the comparison is content policy. Character.AI has spent nearly two years tightening its filter under legal pressure. myVirtual.love sells the absence of censorship as a feature.

The short version if you only read one section

If you want a huge marketplace of user-created characters (anime, celebrity, fictional, historical), free access with ads, voice calls and short generated videos (AvatarFX), and you do not need NSFW to enjoy the product, Character.AI is closer to what you want. If you want uncensored intimate companionship, 18+ image generation, a structured Create screen with anime and realistic as equal categories, and an EU operator with no wrongful-death settlements or FTC inquiry on record, myVirtual.love is closer to what you want.

Content policy: the sharpest difference

Character.AI is SFW-only in 2026. Explicit sexual content, graphic violence and nudity are prohibited platform-wide on every tier, including the paid c.ai+ tier at $9.99 a month. Verifying your age does not unlock NSFW. Verified adult accounts get a "less restrictive" tone, but still no explicit content. Third-party trackers describe repeated rounds of filter tightening since late 2024, in response to the Sewell Setzer wrongful-death lawsuit, the Texas A.F. case, the FTC 6(b) inquiry launched in September 2025 and the settlements agreed in January 2026.

The filter works on intent rather than blocking keywords, so suggestive framing triggers it even without explicit words. Reported behaviors include mid-scene resets, rewritten messages, generic refusals and silent regeneration into a tamer variant. The rollout of the PipSqueak 2 model in April and May 2026 set off a user revolt on r/CharacterAI, with eight threads passing 2,000 upvotes each within 30 days. By September 2026 the app's Google Play rating stood at about 2.2 stars.

Users who wanted NSFW have been leaving Character.AI for years. The alternatives r/CharacterAI recommends include Janitor AI (unfiltered, bring your own API key), Kindroid, SpicyChat, Nomi and Replika. myVirtual.love is aimed at the same users.

myVirtual.love takes the opposite position. NSFW chat, 18+ images in any pose on paid plans and uncensored intimate roleplay are live features, documented on the site and marketed as the product. The Create screen offers a full set of body options, including Breast Size and Booty Size. Hard limits exist (nothing involving minors, for example), but what adults may do is not being tightened step by step, and no account is routed to a stricter model because of an age flag. The product is adult-only and was designed for adults from the ground up.

Character system: marketplace vs pick-or-create

Character.AI is a creator marketplace: some users make characters, other users chat with them. The roster is described as "millions of characters" across anime, celebrities, historical figures, characters from games and shows, helpers, assistants and original creations. Discovery runs through a Feed (on the mobile apps since August 2025), trending rows on the homepage, search and category pages. Top characters have logged tens of millions of chats. This is the whole thesis of the product.

Creating a character on Character.AI means writing prose, not picking options. The fields are Name, Greeting, Short Description, Long Description, Categories, Avatar and a longer "Definition" prompt (up to 32,000 characters, though the end of a long one may be cut off as a chat grows) where the creator writes personality, backstory and example dialogue in a {{char}} and {{user}} format. There is no structured option system. What creators call "training" is editing definitions and star-rating messages to nudge the tone; it does not change the model's weights.

myVirtual.love is pick-or-create, with about eighteen structured fields. You can pick a ready-made character (around 35 realistic characters on the homepage and 36 anime characters on the anime page, all visible without an account) or build your own. For a realistic character that means Personality (8 archetypes), Humor Style (10 values), Hair Style (8), Hair Color (9, including anime-typical pink, blue and violet), Eye Color (4), Body Type (5), Breast Size (5), Booty Size (5), Makeup (6), Clothing (9), Relationship (a 23-item list including step- and in-law roles), Occupation (40+ suggestions), Interests (50+, multi-select) and a voice. An anime character gets Species and Skin Tone instead of Ethnicity, anime archetypes such as Tsundere and Yandere as her personalities, and no Makeup or Humor Style questions. Either way, the character is defined by the values you pick, not by prose you have to write.

Character.AI suits writers who enjoy sculpting a character in prose and want to share it with other users. myVirtual.love suits people who want a structured product where a character is defined by picked values and stays private to them. Neither is objectively better.

One practical difference concerns intellectual property. Character.AI historically had the largest roster of celebrity and fictional characters in the category. On September 18, 2025, Disney sent it a cease-and-desist letter, and Marvel, Star Wars and Pixar characters were removed. More takedowns may follow that precedent. If your reason to try Character.AI was a specific franchise character, it may already be gone or may disappear later. myVirtual.love does not offer franchise characters at all and never has.

Age model: adult-only vs a chat ban for minors

Character.AI was designed as a general-audience creator platform, and under-18 users chatted freely for years. Then came the Garcia lawsuit (the wrongful-death suit over Sewell Setzer, filed in October 2024), the Texas A.F. case (December 2024) and a May 2025 decision in which a federal judge, refusing to dismiss the Garcia case, declined at that stage to treat chatbot output as speech protected by the First Amendment. Character.AI then took a step that is rare among companion platforms: it ended open-ended chat for under-18 users on November 25, 2025. In January 2026 it agreed to settle Garcia and four related family cases. Under-18 accounts can still create videos, stories and streams with characters, but cannot hold open-ended conversations. Accounts that Character.AI's age model flags as possibly under 18 are asked for a selfie check, with an ID as the fallback, through the third-party provider Persona. Adults wrongly pushed into the under-18 experience by that check are a recurring complaint.

myVirtual.love is adult-only. The Create screen's Age field starts at 21 and cannot be set below 18. Its age check is an 18+ warning you confirm before entering the site and an 18+ confirmation when you sign in.

Character.AI is a mixed-audience platform that has been retrofitted with restrictions for minors after wrongful-death litigation. myVirtual.love was designed as an adult-only platform from the start. Different exposure, different design consequences, different regulatory positions.

Voice, video and AvatarFX

Character.AI launched voice calls in June 2024; myVirtual.love added them in August 2026. Character.AI calls stream audio continuously, with the latency of a natural phone call and support for interruptions, thousands of voices plus creator-made ones, and daily minute caps on the free tier that c.ai+ removes. On myVirtual.love, calls are part of Premium ("Call her and hear her voice"), cost five hearts a minute and use the voice picked at Create.

Video is where Character.AI has a distinctive feature with no direct counterpart. AvatarFX (closed beta in April 2025, general release in June 2025 with 5 videos a day for all users) takes a still image and turns it into a short animated video in which the character speaks, sings and moves. It works with realistic humans, 2D cartoons, 3D models and non-human creatures. AvatarFX animates an image into video; it does not generate images from text and it is not a live video call. Character.AI has no live video calls. Scenes (interactive storylines) and Streams (characters debating or performing on a topic you set) are shareable formats that live in the Feed rather than in one-to-one chat.

myVirtual.love does not currently offer video generation, AvatarFX-style animation, live video calls, AR or VR. If short generated videos of your character are what you want, Character.AI is where that lives today.

Images are the reverse. Character.AI's in-chat image generation is rationed through Charms on the free tier, and in our view it lags both dedicated image tools and myVirtual.love on output quality. myVirtual.love charges 5 hearts per image. Premium includes 100 hearts a month at €9.90 on monthly billing, or 150 at €2.99 a month on annual billing: enough for 20 or 30 images a month, or fewer if you also spend hearts on voice calls. Images come out in the style you picked the character in (an anime companion gets anime images, a realistic one realistic images), and paid plans allow 18+ images in any pose.

Pricing and monetization

Character.AI runs a free tier and one paid tier, with a metered virtual economy on the free side.

The free tier is ad-supported and metered. Charms, a virtual currency still in beta in 2026, are earned through daily quests or, on some accounts, bought in bundles. They pay for swipe regenerations, ad skips and in-chat image generation. Full-screen mid-chat ads reached all free users by April 15, 2026 and are the most complained-about change of the year on r/CharacterAI. Free users also wait in a slow-mode queue at peak hours.

c.ai+ (Character.AI Plus) costs $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year (about $7.92 a month). It removes ads and unlocks unlimited voice calls, unlimited swipes, longer memory and the "Soft Launch" chat style, which returned for c.ai+ subscribers only after a user backlash. There is no trial and no lifetime option. Billing goes through the App Store, Google Play or Stripe on the web.

myVirtual.love publishes its prices in euros on the /premium page. Premium is €9.90 a month, or €2.99 a month billed annually (€35.88 a year). The higher Maxxx tier is €24.90 a month, or €7.49 a month billed annually (€89.88 a year), and comes with 200 hearts a month (300 on annual billing), group chat, personas and improved memory recall. Without a subscription you get 5 chat messages a day, the full catalog to browse and the Create screen, all without entering a card.

On annual billing, myVirtual.love's entry point (€2.99 a month) is far cheaper than c.ai+ (about $7.92 a month). The two are hard to compare on per-media cost, because Character.AI's free tier is metered by ads and Charms while myVirtual.love's hearts come with a paid subscription. If ad-free chat is what you are paying for, myVirtual.love's cheapest annual plan costs less than half as much as an annual c.ai+ plan; month to month, the two cost about the same (€9.90 against $9.99).
