Grok Spicy Mode Not Working? What Changed

You open Grok Imagine, look for Spicy and it is not there. Or you tap Generate and get an upgrade screen instead of a picture.

In most cases nothing is broken. Over the past year xAI has narrowed who can reach Spicy, where they can reach it and what it will make, one step at a time and mostly without announcing it. Start with these five checks.

Why Spicy mode is not working for you

1. You are on a free account. xAI's FAQ treats Imagine as a paid feature. It lists free-tier limits only for Chat and Voice. When we tried to edit a picture in Imagine on a free account on 12 October 2026, Grok answered with an upgrade screen: SuperGrok Lite at $10 a month, SuperGrok at $30, SuperGrok Plus at $100 and SuperGrok Heavy at $300. The only fix is a paid plan. xAI's pages do not say which tier includes Spicy, so check that in the app before you pay.

2. You are on the web. Reports since late 2025, including a reply from Grok's own account on X, put Spicy in the iOS and Android apps only. On grok.com the Imagine bar on our free account showed Image, Video and Agent, a speed and quality switch and an aspect ratio, with no Spicy option anywhere. Open the app on your phone, signed in with the same account you pay with.

3. You ran out of weekly usage. Since June every paid product draws on the same pool, so a long week of chat leaves less for pictures. When the pool is empty, paid features pause until the weekly reset. Settings, then Usage, shows the percentage used and the reset date. Wait for the reset or buy Extra Usage Credits, from $5 and on the web only.

4. Your prompt involves a real person. A photo of your ex, a coworker or a celebrity will be refused, whatever plan you pay for. In January X stopped Grok putting real people into revealing clothing. The August policy bans it across the whole service. No setting brings it back.

5. The law where you live. Indonesia and Malaysia showed that a whole country can lose Grok overnight. Elsewhere the rules are narrower. In the UK, for example, any service that shows pornography has had to check users' ages since 25 July 2025.

What changed, in order

August 2025. Grok Imagine launched on 4 August in the iOS app for SuperGrok and X Premium+ subscribers, with Spicy as one of its modes. Within days The Verge reported that Spicy produced nude deepfakes of a world-famous singer without being asked to.

Late December 2025 to January 2026. People on X started asking Grok to "undress" photos of real women. Some of the photos were of children. California's attorney general later cited an analysis of 20,000 images generated between Christmas and New Year that found more than half showed people in minimal clothing.

9 January. X limited image generation on X to paying subscribers. TechCrunch noted that the standalone Grok app still let anyone generate pictures that day.

10 and 11 January. Indonesia, then Malaysia, blocked Grok temporarily. Both restored access within weeks.

14 January. X said Grok would stop editing photos of real people into revealing clothing. The same day California's attorney general opened an investigation. On 16 January his office sent xAI a cease-and-desist letter over sexual deepfakes.

June 2026. Paid plans moved to a single weekly usage pool shared by Chat, Imagine, Voice and Build, according to xAI's own FAQ.

14 August 2026. xAI's current Acceptable Use Policy took effect. It bans "undressing or nudifying real persons" and "depicting likenesses of persons in a pornographic manner".

Today xAI's consumer FAQ, last updated 6 October 2026, does not mention Spicy at all. (Its pages now carry the SpaceXAI name, which is the same company.)

What to use instead: a character who is yours

For pictures, myVirtual.love is built the other way round. You start with a person who does not exist, then make pictures of her, so every picture already follows the rule Grok adopted in January.

Our terms ban "content designed to resemble or depict identifiable real persons", so you cannot bring a real face here either. Adult content opens after age verification through a third-party provider, at the subscription or the first time you reach adult content. The terms add that self-declaration of age alone is not accepted and that we never collect or store the ID documents or biometric data used in the check. Everything runs in the browser, the same site on a laptop or a phone, with no app to install.

Step one: make her once. On the Create screen you pick realistic or anime, then ethnicity, age from 18 to 60, hair, eyes and body type. A 300-character box holds anything every picture should show, like freckles, a tattoo or glasses. Then come her personality, the relationship between you, her job and her kinks. The same wizard builds a man or a trans woman too.

Step two: make pictures of her in the Studio. The Studio never asks about her face again. It asks four things.

• What is happening: Just a photo, Swimwear, Lingerie, Undressing, Just a towel, In the shower, Topless, Nude or Sex.
• Where: dozens of places, from bedroom, shower and hotel room to beach, yacht, rooftop and car, plus fantasy worlds such as a castle or a neon city.
• Camera: close-up, upper body, full body, from below, from above, over the shoulder, mirror selfie or selfie, with a switch for a shot from your own point of view.
• Extra details: free text for the outfit, the light or the mood. Advanced settings add a negative prompt and a seed if you want the same picture twice.

Because her identity was fixed on the Create screen, the face stays the same from one shot to the next. Our article on character consistency explains how that works.

If you would rather not build anyone, the Studio also lets you describe someone for a single shot: woman, man or trans, realistic or anime, plus an ethnicity.

Step three: talk to her. Chat on a paid plan is unlimited, she remembers what you told her and you can call her when text is not enough. If what you miss about Grok is Ani or the other companions rather than the pictures, our Grok companions article covers that side.

What it costs

Building a character is free. A free account gets 5 chat messages a day. Explicit photos need Premium, at €9.90 a month or €2.99 a month on the annual plan, billed as €35.88 for the year.

Photos are paid for in hearts, which arrive every month and never expire: 100 a month on monthly Premium, 150 on annual. A photo costs 5 hearts at Draft or Standard quality and 8 at High, so a month of hearts on monthly Premium buys between 12 and 20 photos. Voice calls draw on the same hearts, at 5 a minute.

Which one fits you
