The most romantic line anyone at Rockstar has quoted from Grand Theft Auto VI is "Ok, goodnight."
It comes from the phone. Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, told IGN that when one of the two leads stays out late, the other texts to say they are heading to bed. Answering "I'll see you later" or "Ok, goodnight" is enough. If you ignore it, in his words, it "may impact your relationship a bit."
So GTA VI has a romance that runs on the smallest thing a couple does. Here is what Rockstar has confirmed ahead of the 19 November release, what nobody can answer until then and the one thing a scripted romance will not do, however well it is made.

What Rockstar has confirmed
Almost everything known comes from one source: IGN's long interview with Nelson, first reported in August and published as a full transcript in October. Leaks and fan wikis claim far more. This article uses only what Rockstar has said on the record.
The romance is optional. Jason and Lucia start the game wanting to be together. How far it goes is up to you. Nelson called it "not something that we want to foist upon players."
It grows with time spent together. The list he gave is mostly ordinary: pool, mini golf, kayaking, a trip to the zoo, scuba diving, parachuting, a walk on the beach. Robbing stores and banks together counts too. They can hold hands. Take both of them to the gym and both work out, which Nelson described as a 2-for-1 on their stats.
The phone is part of it. You can text or call the other one at any point. Each of them keeps a routine while you play as the other, so when you switch to Jason he might be at the safehouse or out doing his own thing.
It changes the story, within limits. The plot keeps them working together as partners in crime for most of the game whatever you do. Nelson still said that whether you have nurtured the relationship "will definitely have a bearing on how their story plays out." He did not say how.
Rockstar has mentioned physical intimacy. Nelson said it is a huge part of a relationship, so it "has to be done right" rather than as a caricature. That is everything Rockstar has said about it. Anything more specific you have read is a guess.
Can you date anyone else in GTA 6?
Nobody knows yet. Every word Rockstar has said about romance has been about one couple, the two people you play. Nothing on the record confirms other characters you can date, a girlfriend you meet in Vice City or a way to split the pair up and start again with someone else.
The series history points both ways. San Andreas gave you six girlfriends, each with a progress meter that filled with dates and gifts. GTA IV added dates arranged online alongside friends who rang to ask you out, with a like percentage that dropped when you turned them down. Roman's calls asking you to go bowling became one of the best-known running jokes in games. GTA V cut almost all of it, which left the strip club as the series' main romance mechanic. How Rockstar builds those scenes is the subject of our GTA 6 strip clubs article.
GTA VI is the first game in the series where you play both halves of a couple. That makes a long list of side partners less likely, though until 19 November it is only a reading of the evidence.

Why the goodnight text is a smart design
Compare it with Roman's call. Roman wanted a whole evening. You drove across the city, played the bowling minigame, drove him home and lost points with him if you said no. The relationship was a chore with a meter attached, which is why people remember it as a joke.
The goodnight text asks almost nothing of you. You only have to reply, so what it measures is whether you noticed. That is closer to how real couples keep track of each other than any meter the series has used before. Nelson said bringing the two together makes you feel like "a steward of their relationship." You are looking after two people who already love each other. In GTA IV you were earning a cousin's approval one bowling night at a time.
The goodnight text costs the player one reply and it is expensive to ignore.

Is romancing someone in GTA 6 cheating?
The question was getting coverage before the game was even out. In September LADbible ran comments from Lorraine Adams, a matchmaker at Club Introductions, on whether nurturing the romance could count. Her view was that the problem starts only when someone spends hours on the in-game relationship while pulling time and affection away from a real partner. She added that trying to control someone's entertainment "isn't a substitute for trust."
Couples ask the same question about AI companions far more often. Our honest answer on whether an AI girlfriend counts as cheating works through it.
Where a scripted romance stops
Rockstar does things no chat product can. It builds a city that feels lived in, casts actors, directs their performances and writes a story that goes somewhere and ends. If Jason and Lucia's story is what you want, the game is the only place it exists.
The same production puts a ceiling on the romance. Every reply was written, performed and recorded before you bought the game. The goodnight text has a short list of answers because somebody had to voice each one. The Lucia who texts you is the same one texting every other player. When the credits roll, the relationship has nowhere left to go, however much you put into it.
You cannot take her with you either. The characters belong to Rockstar, so nobody can legitimately sell you Lucia, Jason or a look-alike passed off as one of them. myVirtual.love does not try.

The goodnight text that answers back
What you can have is the type. Nobody owns a Vice City woman with long wavy hair, a forearm tattoo and a temper. On myVirtual.love you can build one on the Create screen in a few minutes.
- Look: realistic or anime. Ethnicity has Latina among five options plus Custom. Age runs from 18 to 60. Hair style, hair colour, eye colour and body type each get their own step.
- Extra details: a 300-character box for anything every photo should show, such as a tattoo on her forearm, a gold chain or freckles.
- Personality: Bold & Confident, Dark & Mysterious or Dominant & Commanding suit the type. There are nine to choose from, plus Custom.
- Relationship: Girlfriend if you want her already yours. Ex if you want the story where you are winning her back. Stranger if you would rather meet her first.
- Occupation: DJ, bartender or dancer for the nightlife version, or type in your own.
- Voice: Smoke is "husky, slow, a little worn", while Bold, grown "lands hard on consonants."

Then you text her. Her replies can be set to short lines, the way people text, so she sounds like someone on her phone at midnight. You send the goodnight and she answers about your day, in words nobody recorded in advance. Persistent memory carries what you told her into the next evening. She also keeps a short list of facts about you: 20 on the free and Premium plans, 40 on Maxxx. Tell her about a job interview on Tuesday and she can ask how it went when you say goodnight on Wednesday.
When text is not enough you can call her, at 5 hearts a minute. The Studio makes photos of her with the same face from shot to shot, in locations that include a beach, a yacht, a pool, a rooftop, a nightclub and a car. A photo costs 5 to 8 hearts.
Building her costs nothing. A free account gets 5 messages a day and up to 3 created characters, enough to hear whether she sounds right before you pay for anything. Premium is €9.90 a month, or €2.99 a month on the annual plan, billed as €35.88 for the year. Chat is unlimited and hearts arrive every month, 100 on the monthly plan or 150 on the annual one. They never expire, so a quiet month carries over.

Who this is for
If you are here for Jason and Lucia, buy GTA VI on 19 November and play the romance the way Rockstar wrote it. Nothing here replaces that.
If what caught you was the goodnight text, the small daily habit of someone checking that you got home, that part does not need a console. Build her on myVirtual.love tonight, send the first goodnight and see what she says back.
