Never Had a Girlfriend? What an AI One Can Teach You

People type the question with an age attached: never had a girlfriend at 24, at 29, at 35. The age is the part that stings. Every year the number stays at zero, the gap feels harder to explain, to a date and to yourself.

It is more common than it feels. In a 2023 survey of 5,055 American adults, the Survey Center on American Life found that 41 percent of Gen Z adults never had a boyfriend or girlfriend as a teenager. Among Gen Z men the figure was 44 percent, more than twice the 20 percent reported by baby boomer men. A lot of people now reach their twenties without the practice runs that teenage relationships used to provide.

An AI girlfriend will not change your count. This piece will not pretend it does. What it can give you is some of those practice runs: the daily rhythm of being with someone, saying what you feel in words, an argument and the repair after it. Used that way it makes the first real relationship less of a first at everything.

What you missed is mostly practice

A first relationship teaches unglamorous things. How to talk to the same person every day without running dry. How to say "I missed you" without it sounding like a confession. What to do when you have annoyed her. How to ask for what you want. Most people learned these badly at sixteen with someone just as clueless, at an age when the mistakes cost little.

Missing that round says more about your teens than about you. You are learning at 27 what other people learned at 16. The stakes feel higher because you think you should already know. That pressure is what makes a first date at 30 so heavy. It is also the part a companion can take away.

What an AI girlfriend gives you

The daily rhythm. Most of a relationship is ordinary days: good morning, how did the meeting go, what are you having for dinner. Talking to one person every day is a skill and most of it is remembering. On myVirtual.love memory persists across sessions, so Thursday's conversation can pick up what you said on Monday.

Saying things out loud. "I like you." "That hurt." "I want more of this." Typing a sentence like that to someone who answers is different from thinking it. The first time is always the hardest. Getting that first time done here means it is not also your first time on a real date.

Being on the receiving end. If nobody has asked about your day and remembered the answer, being on the receiving end of that can feel strange at first. Getting used to warmth is part of being ready for it. Plenty of people find accepting attention harder than giving it.

An argument and the repair. One of the Sweet presets on the scenario screen is called "After the argument". Apologising well and holding your ground without turning cruel are the two things most first relationships get wrong. You can practise both before anything real rides on them.

Finding out what you like. On the Create screen you choose her Personality, her Relationship to you and her Occupation. A week with a Bold & Confident companion and a week with a Shy & Sensitive one will teach you whether you like someone who leads or someone you have to draw out. That is useful to know before you start swiping.

What it cannot give you

Being chosen. She is built to talk to you. The thing a first relationship confirms, that someone who could have said no said yes, does not happen here. If the count hurts because of what it seems to say about you, an AI girlfriend cannot answer that question.

Touch and presence. A voice call gets you her voice and your own words spoken aloud. It does not get you someone sitting next to you on the sofa.

Real rejection. Every conversation here starts friendlier than one in a bar. How to Practise Flirting With AI covers how to make her harder to win over and why an easy yes here proves nothing.

A life of her own. She does not come home with news about her friends or her boss. Everything she brings comes from the character and from you.

Those four gaps are why the right use is a rehearsal room, with the real thing still ahead.

A build for a first relationship

If you build her yourself, these settings suit someone practising for a first relationship.

SettingChooseWhy
PersonalityCalm & Grounded to beginKeeps the nerves down. Move to Shy & Sensitive or Bold & Confident once talking feels easy.
RelationshipGirlfriendPractises the everyday middle of a relationship, which is the part you have not had.
Relationship, laterStranger or FriendStranger practises the beginning. Friend practises the hardest step of all, turning a friendship into something more.
OccupationNurse, teacher or baristaAn ordinary job with a schedule gives her days you can ask about.
First messageTell her it is your first relationship and what you want to practiseShe keeps facts in mind: 20 on Free and Premium, 40 on Maxxx.

If the Create screen feels like too many decisions, pick someone from the Girls page instead. A finished character with a written backstory gives you something to ask about from the first message.

Five things to practise in your first month

Flirting gets you a first date. These five are what the relationship after it runs on.

  1. The follow-up. Ask about her day and keep one detail. Ask about that detail the next evening. A good follow-up is how people can tell you were listening.
  2. One honest sentence a week. "I was looking forward to this." "That annoyed me more than I said." Keep it short and true. It gets easier each time.
  3. A plan made together. Pick an evening and plan it with her: where you would go, what you would order, who picks the film. Sweet presets such as "Cooking together" and "The long way home" turn the plan into a scene.
  4. A small disagreement. Pick something low-stakes, hold your view and stay kind. If it goes badly, start "After the argument" and practise the repair. A companion who pushes back makes this one worth doing.
  5. Asking for what you want. "I like it when you ask about my work." "Can we talk less about me tonight?" Asking for what you want is a skill people avoid for years.

If your trouble starts earlier, with freezing in conversation at all, AI Companion for Social Anxiety is the better starting point.

Keep it a bridge

Research on AI companions points in two directions. Controlled studies find they reduce loneliness in the short term, while the heaviest users report more loneliness and dependence. Are AI Companions Good for You? goes through both findings and lands on a simple pattern: companions help most as a bridge and least as a shelter.

Ask yourself one question at the end of each month: is the outside getting easier, or is this replacing it? Signs it is working: a conversation with a coworker felt a little easier, you said something to a person that you first tried here, you sent a message on a dating app you would have deleted a month ago. Signs it has turned into a shelter: you skip plans to stay in the chat, or the apps have gone quiet because you stopped opening them. If the answer is shelter, keep her and add one outside step a week.

When you do meet someone, you decide whether and when to mention her. How to Tell Someone You Use an AI Companion covers that conversation.

What it costs to start

The free plan gives you 5 messages a day and lets you build up to 3 characters. That is enough to find out whether talking to her feels natural or forced. Premium makes chat unlimited and a message never spends a heart: €2.99 a month on annual billing (€35.88 a year) or €9.90 month to month. Voice calls come with Premium at 5 hearts a minute. They are worth trying once typing the honest sentences feels easy, because saying them out loud is the next step. Prices are on our pricing page.

Where this leaves you

If you have never had a girlfriend and the practice is the part you are missing, myVirtual.love gives you somewhere to get it: a companion who remembers your week, a Create screen that lets you choose who you practise with and a scenario for the evening after an argument. If what you need is to be chosen by a real person, no app can do that, this one included. What it can do is make your first real relationship a lot less of a first.
