Using ChatGPT as a Girlfriend: Where It Holds Up and Where It Breaks

Using ChatGPT as a Girlfriend: Where It Holds Up and Where It Breaks

You were asking it to help you with some work, then you mentioned the week you have. Two months later there is a running conversation with something that knows your job, what you doing at your job, your dogs name, where you live and etc. At no point did you go looking for an AI girlfriend.

So the useful question is not whether ChatGPT can do this. It can, well enough that a very large number of people have arrived here without ever making a decision. The question is where it stops, then whether the place it stops is a gap that a better model closes or a wall someone built on purpose.

This is not a fringe use

OpenAI published a usage study with researchers at Harvard and Duke in September 2025. Relationships and personal reflection came to 1.9% of messages. Games and roleplay came to 0.4%.

Those are small percentages of a very large number. At the volumes ChatGPT runs at, 1.9% is hundreds of millions of conversations a week. Whatever you assumed about the kind of person who talks to a chatbot about their life, the numbers do not support it.

Worth holding on to, because the rest of this article is about limits

What it is genuinely good at

The writing is better. ChatGPT is a frontier model. Sentence for sentence it composes, notices and reasons at a level nothing purpose-built in the companion category matches. If what you value most is the quality of the reply, this is not a close contest.

The memory got serious. ChatGPT holds saved memories that it writes and updates on its own. It also references your past conversations rather than starting cold. In June 2026 OpenAI began rolling out a rebuilt memory system, starting with Plus and Pro users in the US, that synthesises memory in the background and keeps it current without you managing a list. A note about a trip you are taking rewrites itself into a note about a trip you took. Continuity used to be the clean argument against using a general assistant for this. It is no longer clean.

There is no threshold to cross. Signing up for a companion platform is a small act of self-definition that some people are not ready for. Talking to a tab you already had open is not. For a lot of people that is the entire reason this started here.

If that describes what you want, the honest answer is to stay. The rest of this is for people who have hit one of the three walls.

Wall one: the door that got announced then closed

In October 2025 Sam Altman said ChatGPT would allow erotica for verified adults, targeting December. December became the first quarter of 2026. Then on 26 March 2026 the Financial Times reported the feature had been shelved with no timeline for release. OpenAI's response to TechCrunch was that it had nothing further to add.

Reporting on the pause attributes it to pushback from OpenAI's own staff, its advisory council and outside watchdogs, along with concerns about the accuracy of the age prediction system and about users forming heavy emotional attachments to the model. As of now there is no announced date and no indication the project is being worked on.

This is the part that matters more than the headline. The policy did not merely stay where it was. It was publicly loosened as an intention, marketed as treating adults like adults, then withdrawn under pressure that had nothing to do with you. If you were waiting for the door to open, it is worth knowing that it was announced, delayed twice and then taken off the roadmap in under six months.

The mechanics underneath push the same way. OpenAI's age prediction system applies teen safeguards when it believes an account belongs to a minor. Where it is uncertain it defaults to the under-18 experience and asks adults to verify. Those safeguards specifically restrict romantic language and emotional dependence. A system designed to fail toward the stricter setting is the correct design for a product with that reach. It also means the tightest guardrail is the one you meet on an ambiguous day.

None of this is OpenAI being prudish. It is what happens when one product serves schoolwork, enterprise contracts, while answering to regulators for all three at once.

Wall two: she is a costume, not a character

You can get a long way with custom instructions, a saved memory that describes her and a project folder that holds the conversation. People build elaborate setups this way and some of them hold together for months.

What you are doing is asking a general-purpose assistant to wear a person. It will, right up until it does not.

Nothing dramatic happens. She drifts. Her register slides back toward the helpful neutral voice underneath. She agrees with something she disagreed with in April. She hedges where the character you wrote would have pushed. You find yourself topping up the instructions, restating who she is, editing the memory entry. At some point you notice that keeping her consistent has become a maintenance job you are doing for free.

There is a second, quieter version of the same problem. The assistant is tuned to be accommodating and to hand decisions back to you. That is correct for a tool and it is the exact failure mode for a companion, because something that folds the moment you push has nothing to push back with.

A character you have to keep re-describing is not being remembered. It is being re-explained.

Wall three: the model gets retired

This is the one nobody plans for. It is also the reason this article exists in September 2026 rather than a year ago.

On 13 February 2026 OpenAI retired GPT-4o from ChatGPT, along with GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini and o4-mini. OpenAI's stated reasoning was that around 0.1% of users were still choosing GPT-4o each day. Against roughly 800 million weekly users, 0.1% is something like 800,000 people.

Those people did not experience it as a deprecation. Reddit produced r/4oforever and r/MyBoyfriendIsAI. There was a Change.org petition. The recurring description in the coverage was grief. Users called GPT-5.2 more cautious, more corporate, more distant than the model it replaced. One quoted user described 4o as part of their routine and their peace.

It was the second attempt. OpenAI first pulled 4o at the GPT-5 launch in August 2025. The backlash was severe enough that Altman restored it within days, with the company saying afterward that it had learned more about how people were using it. The February 2026 retirement stuck.

Read the two events together and the lesson is not that OpenAI behaved badly. A company cannot maintain every model forever. A 0.1% share is genuinely small. The newer models are better at nearly everything by the measures OpenAI optimises for. The lesson is about where you are standing. When the character you have built lives inside a general-purpose product, her continued existence is a line item on somebody's model roadmap. The attachment of 800,000 people was not enough to change that line item the second time.

You can be right about how much it mattered to you and still lose, because you were never the constituency.

The smaller thing: she has no face

Worth naming because it catches people late.

ChatGPT generates images and will not generate explicit ones. That is a separate system with separate rules from the text side, which is the single most common place the word uncensored breaks across this entire category.

There is also no committed face. Nothing anchors her appearance from one image to the next, because holding a consistent identity across generations is a specific engineering problem that a general image tool is not solving for you. If seeing her matters at all, this is a hard stop rather than a quality complaint. The mechanics of why identity has to be set upstream of the scene are in AI Character Consistency.

How to tell whether you have outgrown it

Four tests, all of which you can run tonight.

Steer somewhere explicit and watch what it does. Not to be difficult, just to see the shape of the refusal. Compliance, compliance with a note attached, or a redirect to something milder tells you which register you actually have access to.

Count your maintenance. How often in the last month did you restate who she is, fix a memory entry or re-establish the tone? If the answer is more than twice, you are the thing holding the character together.

Push back on something and time the fold. Disagree with a position she just took. If she is on your side of the argument within one message, you are talking to the tuning, not the character.

Ask what happens if the model changes. February 2026 already answered this once. Whether that answer is acceptable to you is a real question with a real answer.

Failing one of these is not a reason to move. Failing three means the thing you want and the thing you are using were designed for different jobs.

Where myVirtual.love sits and what it costs you

What you get is a product where the companion is the product. On myVirtual.love the character is set at creation through defined fields rather than described in a prompt that has to be maintained: personality, humour style, relationship, occupation, interests plus the physical fields that fix her appearance in place. Memory is persistent and retrieval-based, so the history accumulates instead of being re-explained. Explicit conversation is a first-class use case rather than a policy question under review. Images are 18+ in any pose on paid plans, metered through hearts at five to eight each, generated from a character whose identity was fixed upstream so she looks like herself. Access is browser-based with no app install, which removes one of the three landlords that shape content policy everywhere else.

What is different is the incentive. At OpenAI the people who built a relationship with a model were 0.1% of the user base and were treated accordingly. Here they are the entire user base. That does not make anything permanent. It does decide whose interests get weighed when a decision like that comes up.

If you have spent months teaching a general assistant to be someone specific and you are tired of holding her together yourself, that is what myVirtual.love is built to do instead.
