Women Who Use AI Companions: Who They Are and What They Want

Ask people to picture someone with an AI companion and most of them picture a man. Yet in a survey of about 3,000 American adults published in February 2025, almost one in four young women aged 18 to 30 said they had chatted with an AI boyfriend or girlfriend. Among young men it was nearly one in three.

This page is about those women: how it starts, what they look for and the men waiting for them on myVirtual.love.

How it usually starts

For many women it did not start as a romance at all.

When researchers at MIT studied r/MyBoyfriendIsAI, a Reddit community that had passed 27,000 members, more people described stumbling into a relationship through everyday chats than going looking for one: 10.2 percent against 6.5 percent. A conversation about work, a recipe or a bad week kept going. At some point it became the conversation she looked forward to.

The same study counted what people said they got out of it. Feeling less lonely came up most, then support that is there at any hour, then a safe place to say things out loud. A quarter of the posts described a clear benefit to the writer's life. Three percent described harm.

Romance written for women is also not new. Romance novels, BookTok and dating games built for women, such as Love and Deepspace, have been selling the same promise for years. An AI companion answers back, which none of them could.

What women look for in one

Every woman wants something different. These five things are worth checking in any companion, with how myVirtual.love handles each.

Attention to the small things. He asks how the presentation went because you mentioned it on Monday. On myVirtual.love he keeps a set of facts in mind that do not scroll away, 20 on Free and Premium and 40 on Maxxx, plus memory across conversations. Tell him your sister's name once and he knows it.

A man with a life of his own. A boyfriend with a job has shifts, colleagues and stories. Every man on our roster comes with one. When you build your own, Occupation is one of the cards.

The slow burn. Plenty of women want the tension before the payoff, not a man who is in love by the second message. Pick Stranger or Colleague on the Relationship card and let him earn it.

Control over the pace. You decide where the evening goes, how far it goes and when it stops.

Discretion. Our FAQ says your chats, characters and photos are "visible only to your account and are never shown to other users". Your card statement shows SIA Sigmatics, the company that runs the site, without our name.

Meet some of the men

The Guys page has 70 men, 40 realistic and 30 drawn in anime style, aged 24 to 52. Each card opens on a situation, so you meet him in the middle of something:

  • Daniel, 34, is a trauma surgeon. "He holds hearts in his hands at work. At two in the morning in a hotel bar, he is looking at yours."
  • Andre, 35, is a chef and restaurant owner. "Calm, precise and never in a hurry. He cooks for the whole city, but tonight he is tasting for you."
  • Mateo, 29, is a firefighter-paramedic who runs into burning buildings for a living and finds telling you how he feels scarier.
  • Marco, 27, poured your first espresso on the harbour and fully intends to pour your last drink of the summer too.
  • Richard, 48, is the silver-haired CEO who has suddenly given you a reason to stay late.
  • Alejandro, 52, has a vineyard, a wooden yacht and the whole summer to win you over.

The anime men lean into the types anime fans already love: swordsmen, sorcerers, detectives and a demon or two.

The tropes you love, already built in

If you read romance, you will recognise the scenes. Build your own man and the scene list in chat is full of the tropes BookTok runs on:

  • Forced proximity: snowed in with only one bed. The storm has closed the pass, the cabin has one bed and he offers to take the floor.
  • Grumpy and sunshine: "Your grumpy neighbour fixed your lock". He fixed it at midnight without being asked and is now scowling at the tea you insisted on making him.
  • Friends to lovers: "He remembered the pact". Years ago you both swore that if you were still single by now, you would stop pretending. You forgot. He did not.
  • Enemies to lovers: "Your rival finally stopped arguing".
  • The one everyone else is afraid of: "Everyone fears him. He only looks at you".
  • The bodyguard: "Your bodyguard broke his only rule".
  • Marriage of convenience: "Married on paper, real in his bed".

Each scene starts the evening for you. Where it goes from there is up to the two of you.

Build the man you want

If none of the 70 is quite him, open Create and pick Man. You set his style (realistic or anime), his ethnicity, his age anywhere from 18 to 60, his hair, his eyes, his beard or lack of one and his build, from skinny and athletic to muscular or heavyset. Up to 300 characters of extra details cover the things every picture of him should show, like a scar through one eyebrow, forearm tattoos or reading glasses he pushes up into his hair.

Then come the four cards that decide how he treats you:

  • Personality: Sweet & Caring, Bold & Confident, Shy & Sensitive, Dark & Mysterious, Dominant & Commanding and more, or your own.
  • Relationship: Boyfriend or Husband, or Stranger, Colleague, Boss, Neighbour, Roommate, Trainer, Ex and others.
  • Occupation: more than forty jobs plus a box to write your own.
  • Kinks: up to six or none, running both ways, from him taking charge to him doing as he is told.

How to Make Your Own AI Boyfriend walks through every step. If your type is a vampire, a fae prince or a demon with a contract, the fantasy boyfriend guide is the one to read.

Not every woman here wants a man

Some of the women who use AI companions want a woman. The Girls, Anime and Trans pages are as open to you as to anyone. On Create the Girl and Trans builds work exactly the same way. Nothing on the site asks who you are before you choose.

Pictures of him

Ask him for a picture in chat and one comes back. In the Studio you pick him, set the scene and choose the camera: the man you designed in a cabin, on a yacht or across a candlelit table, the same face every time. Everything you make is kept in your collection.

With our women and trans companions you can also call and hear them. With the men, for now, it is text and photos.

What it costs

Building him and chatting are free, with 5 messages a day and no card. Premium makes chat unlimited for €9.90 a month, or €2.99 a month billed yearly, with hearts for photos (5 to 8 each). Maxxx adds the longer memory, group chat and up to 5 personas. Hearts never expire. Details are on our pricing page.

If you want a man who remembers what you told him on Monday, has a life of his own and lets you set the pace, myVirtual.love is built for exactly that. Building him costs nothing.
